treaty of reciprocity

King Kalākaua and members of the Reciprocity Commission

Free trade for Hawaii in the US market was obtainted by trading land to the US that ultimately ended up becoming Pearl Harbor...King Kalākaua (center) was criticized greatly for participating in this treaty.

This is such a fertile topic. I suggest you delve into it a bit more . . . What were the stakes of the treaty? Who was opposing it, and why? Unpack this and any personal thoughts you may have on how things may have gone differently had this treaty never been signed.
