Kaui Hart Hemmings on The Descendants

Just thought I would share this short article about the creation of the film version of Kaui Hart Hemming's The Descendants. I think it is interesting to learn about author involvement when a book is made into a film. Enjoy!

  1. I found this article to be quite interesting, especially in the way that it is explained that Hemming is also a descendant of Hawaiian heritage from a mixed missionary-native relationship. It also mentions the sale of her family's sugar plantation to a wealthy buyer and her grandfather's disapproval. I believe this to be important information when coming to understand the author's role in her writing because it is clearly a tale that reflects personal experiences rather than a fabricated tale. Having a feature film centering around Matt King deciding whether or not to sell his family's land brings to light the similar events that Hemming's family actually had to go through, thus making the story more personal and authentic.
